CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday increased the compensation for over 600-odd victims of Dabwali fire — which claimed 446
lives and impaired 200 others — to around Rs 34 crore. It also directed the authorities to pay this amount along with 6% interest from the date on which victims appeared before the one-man commission that probed the tragedy.
The court revised the compensation amount from Rs 18 crore (Rs 18,11,10,897) announced earlier by the single-member commission under justice TP Garg, after considering each case. It ruled that the sum could at least be Rs 2 lakh in cases where the percentage of disability among girls was 1-5%. It could be raised by Rs 50,000 in every slab of 5% higher disability. It would amount to giving Rs 3 lakh in compensation, and Rs 2 lakh for loss of marriage prospects.
